Shinny Hockey

Growing up did you ever get asked to leave the ice rink at your local park because someone rented the whole ice surface for 6 people? I didn't but I didn't grow up in Ottawa. Thank God, I had a stellar childhood of shinny.
I just took my two oldest sons to the park to get some shinny time in. There were a good 15 or so of us out there having fun. Then someone comes up to us and says"you have to leave the ice we rented it for the next hour". WTF. You rented an outdoor rink. And to make matters worse it was so half a dozen kids could learn to skate. Now I am all for making sure all kids know how to skate, but really the hockey rink. Is there not a sheet of ice right beside the rink for skating. Was that not rentable? Did you not notice that there is some ice right there, more than suitable to learn to skate. Because making the HOCKEY players leave the HOCKEY RINK and play on the SKATING RINK so that some kids can learn to SKATE on the HOCKEY RINK is assinine. Am I the only one that sees it this way? Maybe.
I would love to say this was the first time. No it happens regularly. This time just made less sense because these were kids learning to skate. Which could be accommodated on the skating rink or the canal or any of the non hockey sheets of ice out there. And it wouldn't have interrupted anyone. I have been asked to get off the ice so teams could practice. Can you believe that. A team that is too cheap to rent real ice. They decide to take ice from those who may not play for a team. Must be nice to find those kinds of savings for your team. I would like to know who at Parks and Rec. thought that allowing people to rent outdoor rinks was a good idea. I emailed my city councillor about it last year. I didn't get a response. I guess they were too busy with Landsdown or OC transpo to get back to me.
If you've had similar situations let me know.
